Backhoes

A backhoe is also sometimes called a back actor or a rear actor. This is an equipment that is used for excavations. A backhoe consists of the following parts:

  • Digging bucket at the end of a movable, two-part arm
  • Boom, which is the closest part to the body of the vehicle and is also a part of the arm
  • Dipper is the one that carries the digging bucket
  • Kingpost, which is the pivotal point of the equipment

Modern backhoes are hydraulics-powered. They are often placed at the back of a front loader or a tractor.

The General Uses of a Backhoe

There are many general uses for a tool such as a backhoe. With the rise of more technologically-advanced equipment, such as the front-end loaders, excavators and mini-excavators, backhoes are becoming a bit obsolete. More and more construction sites are now turning to more advanced equipment. It is good to note, though, that backhoes are still not completely outdated and that there are still some being put into good use.

Here are just some of the major uses of this equipment:

  • To clean up constructions areas by moving large piles of dirt from one place to another regardless of terrain
  • To dig the ground
  • To smooth out uneven terrain with the use of the digging bucket
  • To create trenches
  • To carve ditches or dikes
  • To remove deep-seated roots of trees

In most cases, a backhoe has a four-speed transmission, which comes with a clutch (button type). Because of its built, it is often used by farmers and most construction workers in the UK. Many construction equipment might have sprouted but this still remains a useful tool in construction and agricultural sites.
